Châtel is a historic Savoyard village deeply rooted in agriculture. Today, the village’s primary focus has shifted to winter tourism, but not all of its farming traditions have faded away. Nestled in the heart of the expansive Portes du Soleil region, Châtel is a central hub for skiers and snow enthusiasts.
While traveling by road won’t take you directly to the other villages in Les Portes du Soleil, skiing offers unparalleled connectivity. You can effortlessly cross into Switzerland or explore the picturesque French terrain. Thanks to the recent addition of two new ski lifts, Châtel is now directly linked to Linga, making it the perfect starting point for extensive tours across Portes du Soleil. The slopes around Châtel are relatively gentle, making them ideal for beginners and children. In contrast, the Linga sub-area offers more challenging and exhilarating terrain, with opportunities for beautiful but sometimes hidden off-piste runs.
Châtel itself has managed to preserve its charm despite experiencing rapid growth during the heyday of winter sports. You won’t find intrusive concrete structures here. This is because Châtel is a centuries-old village where people continue to live, work, and uphold their agricultural traditions. This is a stark contrast to purpose-built winter sport resorts. The village proudly maintains its strong ties to agriculture, offering farm-fresh products for direct sale, including the renowned local Abondance cheese.
